Cyril Adams Obituary
by Chris Potter
What did a country boy from the UK have in common with a Texas cowboy? I think that it was a passion for sporting shooting in all it’s forms, an appreciation of the craftsmanship of the English gunmakers, on which he was an authority, at one time he was the owner of Atkin, Grant & Lang, and maybe the thought of just trying something unusual, whatever it was, we became brothers in arms.
I met Cyril in 1986 when he phoned my friend, the late Pat Lynch, who had the only ZZ layout in the UK at that time, saying that he wanted to come and try this ZZ shooting and how could he get there. I offered him a lift from Tunbridge Wells and that was the start of a lifelong friendship. At the time he was visiting the UK on a regular basis, keeping a small apartment in London so that he could visit the many gun shops and Auction houses. He was building and renovating guns under the label of Atkin, Grant & Lang, and even after he sold the business he continued to restore and renovate many English guns, saying that the English gunmakers were the finest in the world. He found a market for these in the U.S.A where his customers would remark on both the quality and finish.
Although Cyril was Texan to the core, he seemed to enjoy the company of the UK shooters and travelled with us to many Major events becoming an honorary member of our community.
He was so taken with the sport that he took the first ZZ layout to Houston, Texas to encourage other Americans to take up the sport and today there are numerous clubs throughout the U.S. with many shooters also joining us internationally.
In later life and with failing health he would like to break his journey from Texas by staying in the UK for a few days, catching up with friends and recharging his batteries before continuing on to wherever the next shooting event was. Several times he told us that ‘this would be the last competition, only to turn up the following year, raring to go. This was apparent in Rome last year, when despite the fact that he had to be wheeled between layouts, he shot a fantastic score helping the U.S.A. to win the Gold Medal for the vets. Afterwards he was surrounded by an adoring crowd and there were many grown men with tears in their eyes.
Cyril had a remarkable mind and never tired of sharing his passion for the sport with others, offering encouragement and advice along the way. Wherever he went there was always a ready audience to listen to his stories and one line quips. He became a world wide phenomenon by shooting his 34” Stephen Grant which he had built, and was never without his cowboy boots which he said helped with his shooting balance by pushing his weight forward. I must admit that I tried it to no avail, guess that you had to be Texan!
Not only did I attend Helice shoots with him, but I had the privilege to be invited along to numerous Dove shoots throughout the world, visiting Africa, Argentina and Mexico and will be eternally grateful for the opportunities that he gave to me, experiences that I may not have undertaken without Cyril’s friendship. He also asked for my help in modernizing his old shooting ground in Houston, which I was involved with for 5 years, allowing me to share his life and friends over there.
Knowing Cyril was one of the highlights of my life, apart from his friendship, the knowledge that he imparted to me has been invaluable, and I know that I am not alone in this, the many tributes that I have received for him from all over the world are testament to how he influenced people’s lives.
It’s too soon for me to tell you how much I will miss him, his companionship and everyday banter, but miss him I will, he was truly a remarkable gentleman.
